Just wanted to share this story as I am finding it very surreal that it actually happened.
Was playing a rec game at the iceplex tonight and with about 3 minutes left in the 1st, the ref calls an unsportsmanlike penalty on a member of the other team for yappin at him.
On the way to the penalty box, the player "bertuzzi's" the ref and the ref turtles to the ice (naturally...i think most would). While trying to be retrained by his teammates, he breaks free again and goes and kicks the ref right in the bucket with his skate on.
The result was obviously disasterous. Cops were called, but the player fled the arena from what I hear before they got there. The ref was taken off on stretcher. Really hoping the guy is ok
I am expecting this to make the news tomorrow morning. Just thought I would share

The ref probably said it was going to be named the Polar Bears.
Btw, I have an alibi, in case anyone was wondering.

Team was "Arboc Smoke Shop and Gas Bar". Not sure of the guys name as they dont seem to have even recorded the game on the mmhl.ca website, for obvious reasons.

That's a relief, my team played there tonight, and I'd hate for someone I know to be involved in this mess. Luckily the Arboc Smoke Shop and Gas Bar will surely help bring this character to justice.

Disgusting. Hopefully the ref will be fine and this guy gets turned into the police.

I'm sorry, but when you attack a ref that's outside the bounds of accepted behaviour for sports. This clown deserves to have the full weight of the law come down on him.
Have fun explaining your criminal record to employers and border guards, tool.

Obviously the guy will get permanently banned from the league, the team will likely be kicked out too at least for the year. This guy should be thrown in jail though for assault.

They had a less intense but similar incident in the 2010-11 winter league at the Iceplex.
The Bears, pretty dirty team went after a ref during the final game. Don't think it was intense as a kick in the head but the entire league was notified, and the team got suspended for the next year.
Hopefully they figure something out, 2 incidents in the first year of operations.

Guys like this need to be charged severely to make sure they and everyone else know that this is completely unacceptable.

That's aggrivated assault with a weapon.....
And it is an indictable offence under the Criminal Code of Canada
A person is guilty of aggravated assault if he or she attempts to cause serious bodily injury to another or causes such injury purposely, knowingly, or recklessly under circumstances manifesting extreme indifference to the value of human life; or attempts to cause or purposely or knowingly causes bodily injury to another with a deadly weapon. In all jurisdictions statutes punish such aggravated assaults as assault with intent to murder (or rob or kill or rape) and assault with a dangerous (or deadly) weapon more severely than "simple" assaults.
