COYOTES TRADE BRYZGALOV'S RIGHTS TO FLYERS FOR 3RD ROUND PICK TSN Staff 6/7/2011 8:10:30 PM
The Phoenix Coyotes have traded the negotiation rights of goalie Ilya Bryzgalov to the Philadelphia Flyers in exchange for forward Matt Clackson, a third-round pick in the 2012 draft, and future considerations.
The deal gives the Flyers an exclusive window to negotiate a new contract with the 30-year-old Russian before he becomes an unrestricted free agent on July 1.
Clackson's contract expires on June 30, meaning Phoenix has the same opportunity to discuss a deal with Clackson before he also becomes an unrestricted free agent.
Bryzgalov went 36-20-10 for the Coyotes last season in 68 games with a 2.48 goals against average and seven shutouts.
He earned $4.5 million last year in the final season of a three-year, $12.75 million deal with Phoenix.
"After several discussions with Ilya and his agent, it became very clear to us that we were not in a position to sign Ilya to a long-term contract," said Coyotes' general manager Don Maloney in a statement. "We will now focus our efforts on adding another goaltender to our roster for the upcoming season."
Bryzgalov has split his seven NHL seasons between Anaheim and Phoenix. He was drafted by the Ducks in the second round of the 2000 entry draft, and played for them until he was claimed off waivers by the Coyotes in November, 2007.
He won the Stanley Cup with the Ducks in 2007 as back-up to J-S Giguere, and was named as an NHL second team All-Star in 2009-10.
Hmmmmm... Philly looking for goaltending? Never saw that coming.

Pronger just had back surgery (i think), so I wonder what his future will be. I'm wondering if the Flyers would be abe to hide his cap hit to free up some room for Bryzgalvich's contract (if they need to?).

I'm a Flyer fan, I bleed orange, but I'll be booing this SOB when they come visit the Jets. Send him back to the KHL or Iceland for all I care. His not a team player and he chokes in the playoffs, send him home.

...and there goes Phoenix's chance at making the playoffs. They have bigger problems than worrying about the playoffs anyway, obviously. But unless they can somehow snag a legitimate #1 goaltender, no playoffs this year followed by a move to Quebec City and another bitter press conference from Bettman.

Funny thing is we have bad winters in Philly, especially the last 2 years we had record breaking snowstorms and multiple 20+ inch snowstorms each of the last two winters.
It also took until the end of May this year for the warm weather to really consistently arrive.
Hope Bryz is ready for the cold weather this winter.. Lol

Why not wait until the end of the month and he's a free-agent and can sign anywhere he wants.

Similar to when the Flyers tried this with Hamhuis last year and it didn't work.
