Why not use a soccer (football) model, and name the team "Winnipeg HC"?
I'm posting it here in Revenue Ideas because it gives the team a lot of flexibility in terms of marketing alternative uniforms.
Ask the NHL for the "Jets" name, logos, colours, etc. back -- and the Winnipeg HC can use those for developing much of its home and away uniforms, with a bit of a redesign. People can still cheer on the "Jets", but as it is a different franchise, that'll be the team's nickname instead of its official name.
Alternative "third" uniforms could honour the Winnipeg Falcons, the Winnipeg Warriors, and heck, even the Manitoba Moose.

Sounds good to me. I've thought the same thing myself. When the Jets left I started following European soccer instead of the NHL. North American sports could learn a lot from that model. North American sport franchises get too caught up in nicknames. The focus should be on the city/region. Let the fans come up with the nickname themselves with chants at the games.
And promotion/relegation would be a great addition to North American sports as well. Eliminates embarrassments like the Coyotes and Islanders franchises.
