I don't think 1290 came out of the woodworks on a hope they will get the broadcast rights for our new team. If they don't get the teams broadcast rights, don't expect to see them around long!

As much as I would prefer 1290, I think cjob will get the contract.

The return of the NHL will be a boon to a local sports show. Lets face it most people watch major league sports. In Canada that means NFL, NHL. NFL is heading towards disaster at mach 2 and the NHL is coming back.
Once the NHL is back suddenly people will be super interested in NHL talk especially that based around the local team. Getting the NHL contract will dramatically boost ratings for other programs because it will drive people towards the station. Spend money to make money. NHL will be major anchor. You can build shows around that quite easily.

Believe it or not 1290 was just another piece of the puzzle falling into place!

I agree with other posters. I can't stand the endless basketball talk. Will the Miami Heat be considered a failure if they only win one championship?" For the ten thousandth time, "I don't care." H&L are great. But can we get some Canadian content for morning rush hour? Those ESPN guys spend less than one percent of their time on hockey. its cheaper to rebroadcast stuff from espn than it is to pay hosts and producers to put out a whole different show..if they can pick up the jets though, they could generate the money to do so Agree-I thought the whole point of 1290 was that when TSN radio launched in Toronto we would be picking up their content rather than goin with the ESPN feeds. I really hope they're planning on doing this. It just seems to make so much more sense.

as soon as 1290 dumps the Jim Rome Show and all that basketball/ baseball talk ( minus the goldeyes of course) I think you see 1290 get more of the share than they are getting right now. Absolutely agree! I give 1290 many chances. Most times I get national US shows about sports I care little about. Even the final four in the NBA finals doesn't hold the dial more than 30 seconds. However, CJOB has a set formula that offers only a few hours of coverage per week. Games, pre and post game shows and an open line sports show that the NHL will resume to dominate. 1290 could offer alot more in depth coverage and many more hours of coverage per week. Realistically, I expect the game coverage to go to CJOB due to ratings and the price that this would drive for TNSE. Then I expect pre and post game shows through 1290 plus additional special shows throughout the week. And then both radio stations will have their open sports shows where they will both be dominated by the NHL team. Once the ratings are sifted through the first contract like this then the real war for control begins. Hopefully, 1290's ratings comes way up to challenge CJOB for the game rights. If so, then TNSE can have each station go toe to toe for the next contract. And that will be when the seriously big mioney arrives for radio ratings. 1290 needs to get better signal spread. I can get CJOB alot farther: in Northern Ontario, Saskatchewan, North Dakota. this means a wider pool of potential customers for games and merchandise. 1290 offers none of that at present. Chris PS> can you say Dog eat Dog? or Thrasher eat Thrasher? With 1290, TNSE has a bidding war like CJOB did with KY58, without 1290, CJOb takes the rights for alot less price. So the fact that 1290 just recently popped out of thr ground, like say Blush turning into 4Play, is an attempt to time their business and retool it to suit the spinoff NHL business. Nothing wrong with that at all, but it is risky by definition.

Hopefully, now that TSN Radio exists, a deal to carry their programming on SportsRadio 1290 in place of ESPN stuff can be put in place soon. Last summer, on my drive out to Calgary, the only remotely interesting radio I could get in one stretch of Saskatchewan was an ESPN radio station and they had an NFL preview show going for 3 hours! That might make sense to do a week before Labour Day, but this was July 24... a good 6 weeks before the NFL season began!
As has been pointed out, ESPN is way to NBA/NFL heavy for Canadian markets. We need more hockey (NHL, Team Canada), Blue Bombers, other CFL, Blue Jays and Raptors coverage than what we're getting right now... more local shows and a TSN Radio partnership replacing the ESPN radio one would be a way to achieve that.
Edit: Totally agree with Chris' thoughts on the NHL radio contract.

Without the broadcast rights to the nhl team - 1290 will limp along for a season or two but then fade away. Say what you want about cjob - but they will continue their stranglehold on the winnipeg am market if they land the broadcast rights. I rarely listen to the radio other than in the car - every bomber away game is on tv and I am at every home game - so its just pre and post game.
The nhl rights are a "king maker" for cjob and survival for 1290.

I have followed Illegal Curve since the days they were on Red river college station, I find them still a bit raw but very insightful. The station 1290 should have more local coverage of the Bombers, and do a weekly show on the Vikings. I do think they have an another all hockey show covering the junior all the way to the NHl and since they are affiliated with a station in Edmonton they should air this show thepipelineshow.com/ . THey got to cut the Jim Rome and whenever ESPN only talks about US college football and basketball. if they could edit ESPN radio shows that would be. If they are at all affiliated w/ Bob McCown show Prime Time Sports then definitely they should carry there show as well. Along Hockeycentral and Grapeline. and air their other affiliates shows as well.

Jim Rome is F n hilarious!! I even got my girlfriend to listen to Rome. You people just dont get his comedy... How could you not. Last show they should ever get rid of.. I listened to 1290 back in 2001 when no one listened and when they went off the air we lost the the Jim Rome show. Best thing 1290 did was bring back JIM when they returned

i love Rome and he does talk about the NHL, he has had Don Cherry on many times. his radio show is not produced by espn , it's his tv show j.r.i.b. that is an espn product

1290, whether they carry TSN radio feeds or not, is TSN. So, don't look for them to carry Bob Mcown or PTS as PTS is a Sportsnet Radio show. (fan 590 TDot & 960 Cgy)

Once the Bombers season starts and the NHL season with Winnipeg's team (regardless if they have broadcast rights) ratings will increase.

When the FAN 960 started up in Calgary it had low ratings at the start.
660CFR (Calgary Flames Radio) was like CJOB in Winnipeg.
When the FAN 960 got the Flames broadcast contract everything changed.
More local programing with emphasis on the NHL & CFL.
1290 am needs to follow their lead.
Get the Winnipeg NHL radio broadcast contract.
Add local programming devoted to the Jets & Bombers.
Pre & post game shows, live coverage of the NHL draft and July 1 Free Agency.
The website should include all relevant audio clips from scrums to interviews with Jets personel.
If this is accomplished 1290 AM will be the dominant radio station and CJOB, like 660CFR will become less relevant.

It seems pretty obvious the contract is CJOB's to lose.
TN even said as much this week saying, in regards to broadcast rights, that they would try to do business with those who have done business with them already.
CJOB has clearly been showing off with their wall to wall coverage of the return of the NHL this past week. And they have instructed all of their on-air people to gush about it (even guys like Currier and Irving who crapped all over the return previously).
1290 has a couple of decent shows but unless they are willing to over-pay for the deal, they wont get it. And then 1290 is going to go bye-bye because most people will tune into the station carrying the game before it starts and after. As good as H&L can be, who would listen to it when the rights holder is on at the same time?
Regarding H&L, I had heard of them for awhile before finally tuning in before they went nightly and I said to a friend of mine who is in broadcasting that it was terrible, that Hustler was okay but Lawless was the worst public speaker I had ever heard on the radio. Then I realised he was a newspaper guy so I gave him a bit of a pass.
But my advice would be for Lawless to listen to his show a few times and try to tighten up. Two things would make a vast improvement - ask direct questions rather than framing your questions with a rambling comment and train yourself not to say "ahh" and "ummm". It's become a way of speaking but radio and TV people have to train themselves not to speak like that.
