Based on the BBM radio ratings that came out this weekend. Sports Radio 1290 needs a MAJOR anchor, like an NHL team contract, to survive. They are 2nd last in the local radio market only ahead of CKSB. Who? 1290 actually lost ground after the switch to all sports. 0.7 share, OUCH! CJOB however is still first with a 16.6 share, only 1pt ahead of Hot 103, who is at 15.6. So if you're TNSE, where do you go? CJOB with the history and ratings, or 1290 which can offer you so much more in potential, to the point your team would basically "own" the station? www.pugetsoundradio.com/cgi-bin/forum/Blah.pl?m-1306450945/

as soon as 1290 dumps the Jim Rome Show and all that basketball/ baseball talk ( minus the goldeyes of course) I think you see 1290 get more of the share than they are getting right now.

Personally, I hope TNSE sees the potential in 1290. H&L must have heard something, cause why on earth would they have made that move. If they didn't know "something" on the horizon, they just made the dumbest "DJ" move in history. Big gamble or not?

Agreed...I do enjoy the H and L show...and am a Goldeyes season ticket holder...BUT...those alone will not get ratings... Having the Jets Will!! It will be interesting to see which way TNSE goes. I AM NOT a CJOB fan..they have turned into nothing more than an informercial station!!

If 1290 can grab the NHL and eventually the Bombers that would be huge for them. They will have to spend money to make money. Let's see how serious TSN is about this station. Only station in Calgary I listen to is Fan 590. Maybe they can entice Dean Molberg (Boomer) to move back to Manitoba. Hi Dean . !

Ya, I would have to think a move to the TSN format is in the future. Though, only the general talk shows, so that we aren't subjected to too much Toronto talk. Then fill the mid day with "Jets" shows.

It may be obvious to us, but I think the people at Illegal Curve deserve a really big pat on the back. They are doing a GREAT (!) job. Great interviews, well planned shows, great content.
H&L are WAY better than the CJOB show at 6.
AND the radio coverage by 1290 (Illegal Curve special with H&L) on that Thursday night that Brunt broke the story was ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!!!
Folks, it don't matter what the ratings have shown up till now. All 1290 needs is to get some publicity and just enough additional programming and on-air personalities that they can reduce their US feeds just a little. The people that did the broadcasting that Thursday night are the future of sports broadcasting in Winnipeg!
If 1290 gets the Jets and Kielback, it is instant market impact. !! But they need to get some additional programming before that, and they need to do some marketing in Winnipeg, so that they can start to build a greater market awareness and a broader base of listeners.
As for me, they have my vote and my ears.

I really, really hope its 1290, especially after that letter the CJOB station manager wrote to Darren Ford 4 or 5 years ago, saying DF was only in this for his own ego.

And the god awful NFL lockout talk...dump the american sindicated programing and you'll get more listeners! It'll cost more to hire people, but there's some good names in this town. Leah Hextall, Hustler, and I'd even think Wheeler would be a good switch to sports radio.

Illegal curve is excellent-it compares with any sports talk show from a major U.S. market. To me, the guys actually sound more professional and "polished" from a broadcasting standpoint than H and L . H and L stammer and stumble too much (ah...umm... ah.. constantly) Also, I find Illegal Curve guys actually take issue with things, they express outrage occasionally, they offer strong opinions. H and L are like neutered. They seem way too scared to question anything the NHL does or how Bettman handles things. It's a bit frustrating to listen to.

BTW, I like the syndicated ESPN stuff; I'm used to listening to US sports talk especially KFAN in Minneapolis 'cause I'm a massive Purple fan. I don't need more Goldeyes talk personally. To me, it's the equivalent of watching grass grow or paint dry.

Swervin, I agree completely. The a major sports contract can MAKE a station. They will see their ratings jump. Fans will find the carrier on the dial, they will listen to the games. Its the follow up and support programming thats just as important, so that they can maintain those ratings. I still believe CJOB has such high ratings b/c "my grandma" has 3 radios stuck on 680 and the volume at a comfortable level at all times.
Good point on the Illegal Curve. They are a little raw in their delivery, but I think their show is full of info. H&L blow the CJOB Sports Show out of the water.
I found the "ROTJ" night to be well done. They best part was the interview with Keilback and he was informed "this is your audition".

Way too much American content. More Canadian / local coverage will get me listening more than just b/w 4PM - 6PM.
Also, I wish that some of the AM stations would also simulcast on the FM band. Many of the portable devices sold these days only support FM radio and not AM radio.

To me, it's the equivalent of watching grass grow or paint dry. I'm also a huge Vikes fan, so I hit the 740 The FAN Fargo feed, though once Bomber season is over, 1290 could use this fandom to their gain and carry Vikes broadcasts. I appreciate the Goldeyes talk. Its their main "tennant" right now and Paul Edmonds is a sweet sound to sore ears. Honestly, I could listen to him call bingo. Similar to another Wpg Play by Play great. 710am ESPN Bismark 740am The Fan (Fox Sports) Fargo 1290am Sports Radio Wpg (ESPN)

Agree with jetstar-1290 should capitalize on the number of Vikings fans here in town and pick up some KFAN content. Lawless would probably resign; he hates the Purple. Which is probably why I er....ah...er ....can't stand Lawless.

They are 2nd last in the local radio market only ahead of CKSB. Who? You probably already knew but CKSB is the french station, located across Notre Dame arena in St.B, I would expect them to have small market share. I listen to 1290 on my drive home from work now 4-4:30ish, but that's the only time.

Hustler needs a new partner IMO. Lawless sounds unprepared at the best of times...doing three things at once while the program is on...away from the mike to leave Hustler hanging...unprofessional.

This weekend was the first time I'd ever heard of the Illegal Curve show, and I've got to say it was excellent! Great guests, thoughtful questions, and when they do disagree with something.....they don't pull any punches! There were several on air rants... which agree with their point or not, is fun to listen to! Also had a great live chat going on their website at the same time. I'm a fan, and will be tuning in to 1290 a lot more. I understand you want to cover all the sports bases (Ha!) with your baseball, basketball, NCAA coverage, but please don't forget we are in Canada. Hockey is king... and should be treated as such in your programming.
