I'll tell you all why the Jets name is critical in this city's return to the NHL.
Sports fans in this city and province are so excited to become an NHL city once again that once the official announcement is made it will incite the hugest party this city will ever see from Portage & Main outward...
Think about it. Why do we want to get back into the NHL? The current state of the game isn't why we're so excited to be back in the "big league".
It isn't the "fresh start" the NHL has attempted in the last 15 years or so. The one with teams in Arizona, Georgia, Florida and several other big population locations in the United States that are bleeding money every single year.
The league that since leaving places like Winnipeg and Quebec City for cities with big populations but no connection to hockey in search of that big TV deal that landed them on some channel most of the country doesn't even know about trying to compete with professional bowling for ratings. Hopefully that new contract is better than when the major network that will actually have them doesn't pay the league squat besides some commercial revenue and the privilege of being on a network that Americans can actually watch, so long as there isn't something better to air.
All of this and more under the buffoonery of Gary Bettman. And all that gets him is a lucrative new contract paying him several million dollars annually. It is a travesty how this great game has been reduced to a fifth rate sport amongst casual fans in the States under his reign as commissioner. OK, I won't get into it any deeper on Mr. Bettman, if I did you'd be reading this for hours...
To us it is a big deal to be in the NHL. As sad as it is for me to say, the league has no legitimacy beyond the history behind it. The Stanley Cup. The original 6. Maurice Richard, Bobby Orr, Wayne Gretzky, the legends of the sport that made this league we're about to head back into the one and only elite level of hockey. Only people that truly love the game can appreciate what it means to be a part of the National Hockey League.
I have lived in Winnipeg my whole life and loved hockey and thus the NHL and what it is supposed to be. I don't intend to change your opinion, but this is mine and I feel I can safely say it is the same as the majority of others.
To me this "fresh start" talk as far as the NHL in Winnipeg is ridiculous. Stick with what the NHL in Winnipeg meant and still means to millions of hockey fans world wide before the numerous failed "fresh starts" that have been attempted since the mistakes that resulted in Winnipeg not being a part of the league since 1996.
