Dan Sexton would be a good player to develop, he had a great break out year in Anaheim last year but he didnt get much of a chance this year. Also in Anaheim Luca Sbisa is a good defensive prospect he hasnt lived up to expectations yet but I think being on a team with a guy like Buff might help him get his game going.
Alex Tanguay, Andrew Brunette, Brandon Dubinsky are all UFAS that I think could be cheap but worth it.

I think Ryder may be a possibility for some scoring on the right side. I can't see the Bruins re-signing him, as they're pretty close to the cap. I'd be leery about Vrbata, as Tampa was quite anxious to get rid of him when they signed him. Seems he only plays well in Phoenix. If Bogosian does get traded, then I'd like to see us try for Bieksa to replace him, with a plan B being Babchuk from Calgary. Babchuk was traded for Ian White and I'd prefer Babchuk over White, even tho White's a local boy. Babchuk's a Russian who could be a mentor for Burmistrov. Ryder might not be a bad idea. I wonder what he would go for? As long as it's not major money, he could be a good fit. I think after this playoff that Bieksa is going to get a major payday. I really don't see TNSE being in the mix for him (especially with Enstrom, Buff, Hainsey, and Oduya already getting pretty big bucks). I like your Babchuk suggestion.

Sexton is a RFA and Sbisa has 4 more years on his deal and then will still be an RFA. Not saying that they might not be good pieces to think about, but they will require our team to send considerable assets the other way to acquire.
Agree on Tanguay and Brunette. Dubinsky is an RFA and a huge part of the Rangers. He will be resigned by New York
So here is a summary of some realistic (I think most of these could play RW) UFA's:
Ryder Vrbata Miettinen Brunette Larose Tanguay Jokinen Ward Kopecky Leino Goc Eaves

Another thing to think about is another team putting a bid on our RFA's. Granted we can match, and have plenty of cap space, but we may decide not too depending on the salary.
For instance, if someone offers Blake Wheeler $3.5 or $4 million (which likely wouldn't happen), we could walk away from that situation, and take a 1st and 3rd round pick.
More worried about Ladd and Bogosian, but again, we would likely match for those two.
Here is a multi-year compensation comparison for signing a RFA.
2011 Compensation – from ProHockeyTalk at NBC Sports and Craig Custance of The Sporting News
$1,034,249 or below: No compensation $1,034,250 – $1,567,043: A 3rd round draft pick. $1,567,044 – $3,134,088: A 2nd round draft pick. $3,134,089 – $4,701,131: A 1st and 3rd round draft pick. $4,701,132 – $6,268,175: A 1st, 2nd, and 3rd round draft pick. $6,268,176 – $7,835,219: Two 1st’s, a 2nd and a 3rd round draft pick. Over $7,835,219: Four 1st round draft picks.
2010 Compensation
$1,020,348 or below: No compensation. $1,020,349 to $1,545,981: A 3rd round draft pick. $1,545,982 to $3,091,963: A 2nd round draft pick. $3,091,964 to $4,637,944: A 1st and 3rd round draft pick. $4,637,945 to $6,183,925: A 1st, 2nd, and 3rd round draft pick. $6,183,926 to $7,729,907: Two 1st’s, a 2nd and a 3rd round draft pick. I agree with you Bob E, I think we need to match on Ladd and Bogosian. A guy like Wheeler we might have to think about depending on the return.
If it was for less than 3/09 and the return was only a 2nd, I think we would have to match. That's a pretty poor return.
Over 3.09 where the return would be a 1st and a 3rd would make you consider. It would be tough to let him go though. Not because he is amazing or anything, just because there already is a hole at top 6 forward. Losing him just makes the hole bigger.
I'm not overly worried on the RFA front. I don't know the numbers, but can anyone report how many RFA offer sheets have even been offered since they were introduced? It doesn't seem like they get thrown out too often.
Actually, maybe it would be to our Advantage if someone offer-sheeted Ladd. If it's a number that is acceptable to TNSE, that is one way to lock him up! I.E. If someone offers him a 4 or 5 year deal and we match.
IMO:
RFA's
Ladd - Re-sign Wheeler - Re-sign Maxwell - Re-sign Stewart - Re-sign Bogosian - Re-sign Machacek - Re-Sign Schremp- Walk Festerling - Walk Kulda - Re-sign
UFA's
Dvorak - Walk Boulton - Re-sign Meyer - Walk

Another potential forward we could target is Alexei Ponikarovsky.
He and Antropov had a bit of chemistry together in Toronto.

Ladd will likley be around $3 m cap hit to sign to a multi-year deal. Would like a long term deal with him, not a 1 or 2 yr deal, as he will then enter UFA soon after.
Wheeler, i can take or leave. If you sign him to a $2.5 mill deal for 2+ years, fine, but he would likely be a target for upgrade within the next 2 yrs (or so) anyway. Big body that seems to play well with Little and Ladd - has some skill, but his compete level leaves alot to be desired (game in and game out) - to me.
Stewart adds some sandpaper and can put up modest points. I'd keep him too.
Completely agree with you, as many are role players that are necessary to affordably fill the roster in a cap world. Wouldn't sign too many to long term deals, as this is where young drafted players would one day step in to start - i.e. Klingberg.
As of right now, Antropov is our highest paid forward, ouch. If we can't move him, he'll likely be RW on a Kane/Burmistrov line - for next year. Another reason why a winger like Landeskog would be a great draft pick for the short and long term.
Cormier and Slater are our best faceoff % guys at around 60% - rest are under 50%. Area to improve.

Why do you think LA was desperate to get a LW (penner) at the trade deadline? Poni was a bust. But, I suppose, if you sign him for a $2.1 M cap hit and not a $3.2 M cap hit, and hope he can score you 25 g, then maybe it's worth the gamble. I'd rather see a younger player and more established scorer fill that spot.

If we only sign him to 1 and he makes noises that he is going to test free agency my personal philosophy is to always trade your UFA's (the one's with Value) at the deadline if they are not coming back. It would be a shame to have to trade the captain after one year in WPG. That would not look too good.

If the team is looking to fill the RW spot with Kane and Burmistrov I would also prefer that they target someone younger. If the team was competing for the cup it would make some sense to add a vet. But this team is in a build mode. So you might as well get some young talent that call all grow together. Take your lumps now, and then compete for the playoffs and then cup.

Why has no one else mentioned the possible Ace in the hole goalie of ours? If TNSE is truly taking over affiliation with the Moose, then we'll have Eddie Lack in our system, baby!!! May be a bit shaky in the net the first little while, but the future is bright indeed!

Check out this mock draft (the website operator replaced the Thrashers logo with the Jets logo for the 7th spot): www.mynhldraft.com/NHL-Mock-Draft/I think the best pick in your position would be Defenseman Ryan Murphy. If you're going with a forward, I would pick Sean Couturier.

Not sure why he did so bad in LA but he is a decent player and some team is going to be able to sign him for cheap this summer. He and Antropov are good friends and had chemistry playing together. Maybe if Winnipeg signs Ponikarovsky it will help both him and Antropov play to their potential again. Why has no one else mentioned the possible Ace in the hole goalie of ours? Anyone think the TNSE will try to make a splash and sign Brad Richards?

Post by Bob E on Jun 2, 2011 18:42:24 GMT -5
Nope. Don't think so.
Don't get me wrong, i love Brad Richards as a hockey player. But he'll throw your salary cap #'s out of whack as you'll have to spend $8 mill over 5 yrs (minimum - $$ and term) and that really doesn't make sense at this point in the game. Handcuffs you for the future, and you can't re-sign Kane, Little, etc when they become FA's.
Let us draft a couple of cornerstones, get established in the league again, build a young contending team and when the time is right to add that one piece we're missing to make us a legitimate stanley cup contender, then we can debate making that move.
I'm not a big fan of the HUGE $ contracts for a long term - unless you are 100% sure of the player. It has to be a Toews, or Stamkos, or Kesler, or Crosby (minus concussion) before you commit like that. I'm okay with Big Buff's contract. Impact guy at a decent number.
So many times you see teams start to second guess yourself once that kind of deal is in place. You think NJ - Kovy, NYI - Dipeitro, NYR/MTL - Gomez, Ott - Spezza aren't now wondering a) why did we do that, b) what do we do now. I am soooooo glad we DIDN'T sign Kovy. Kings got it right last summer, too.

I think we should stop considering Brad Richards. NYR or the Leafs will sign him to some blow-your-brains-out type contract that they'll probably end up regretting in a couple of years. Richards is 31 - his best years are behind him. Leave him for Sather or Burke.
As for Ladd, I'd be surprised if we sign him for less than $4M per season. Look at what Byfuglien signed for. Ladd's the captain, so I predict he'll get at least $4M per.

No way at all that we start this franchise with a 8-10 million salary tied up in a Brad Richards. He's an excellent player, I just don't see TNSE throwing that kind of money around early. This team should be built up through the draft and with the right kind of other free agents thrown in.
