Jets? Moose? What do you think? If we get NHL team, which name is best?

LIKE we said -- it's a personal decision and boy did our readers take it personally.
True North Sports and Entertainment is working on buying the Atlanta Thrashers and relocating them to Winnipeg. If that happens it's almost certain the team will be renamed.
Roll by the water cooler or stop in at the coffee shop and Name Game is on in full swing.
Getting a team is the first step and talking names is perhaps a little premature, but we wanted to know what Manitobans were thinking.
TSN's Dave Hodge says they should be called the Manitoba Gold. Our own Gary Lawless likes the idea of sticking with the Moose, and hockey writer Tim Campbell favours the Falcons.
There are plenty of opinions circulating out there suggesting what a new NHL team in Winnipeg should be called.
A reader going by the name Null had this to say:
We've been chanting "Bring Back the Jets!" for years so how can it be anything but??? The Jets are now part of history so why dismiss the name for something else historical? That just doesn't make sense. Seriously, if it was something besides the Jets, there would be no nostalgic feeling associated with the team at all. So, those of us with warm fuzzy childhood memories of going to Jets games...might reconsider plans to buy season tickets. WE WANT THE JETS!!
Commander1 disagrees with Lawless:
The "Moose" would be a HORRIBLE choice for our new team. Winnipeg is trying to forget the last 15 years ever existed!
Moose is minor league. Bush league. For the kids & families -- not the big hockey fan. And I believe you Mr. Lawless, are the only the Winnipegger over 10 years old that wants that name. Give the Moose the boot and bury 'em. They're dead & gone.
"Jets" is a poor choice too. Let's face it, the Winnipeg Jets were a poorly-run sports team, playing out of NHL's worst arena, and were a bad team more often than not.
It's time to start fresh & new! I've heard True North wants "Manitoba" instead of Winnipeg, which I don't necessarily agree with (Pittsburgh vs. Manitoba? Detroit vs. Manitoba? Really?), but I suppose I could get used to it.
I'm much more concerned over the JERSEY and LOGO and what they'll look like. We could have the greatest team name in the world -- but who cares if the colours and logo are hideous?
Now don't forget, True North hasn't closed the deal to bring the Atlanta Thrashers to Manitoba just yet, but just for fun, let's play the name game one more time. What do you think the team should be called? Send your answers and opinions to feedback@freepress.mb.ca and we'll run a selection in Saturday's paper.

Here's what I submitted:
I would name the new NHL team the Manitoba Pioneers. The pioneers of this province who brought Manitoba into prominence should be memorialized on an ongoing basis. Remembering historical figures can serve to inspire Manitoba’s youth to reach for their dreams. The pioneers from its history that should be proudly commemorated by all Manitobans are the likes of Louis Riel, Nellie McClung, the leaders of the 1919 Winnipeg general strike (such as R. B Russell), J. S. Woodsworth, Duff Roblin, Margaret Laurence, James A. Richardson, Israel Asper, Burton Cummings & Randy Bachman, Dr. Allan Ronald, Dr. Arthur Mauro and Dr. Lloyd Axworthy, among others. Manitoba has also produced pioneers specifically related to hockey. Names such as Billy Mosienko, Terry Sawchuk, Ben Hatskin, Dr. Gerry Wilson, Jennifer Botterill and Jonathan Toews come to mind.
It is my hope that Manitobans would be honoured and proud to refer to their new NHL team as the Pioneers.

There has been a great deal of talk that the Moose moniker is not professional enough. Well it got me thinking of the Miami Dolphins, how many of you would have selected that name for a pro football team. Today it well accepted by all. My point, if its not the Jets the Moose will be just fine.

If it happens and since its True North dime then it will be the Moose. I think in time the public will just get use to it.

Once I see the jersey and I know it is real I will be used to it! You could even name the team after my ex wife and I would be ok with it

Here's my submission,
True North absolutely has to name the team the Jets!
There is a proud hockey history and generations of fans with a deep, emotional connection to the Jets. I’m 25, I was just 9 years old when the Jets played their last game so I am part of the younger generation who has grown up with the Moose for far longer than the Jets, but I would be absolutely disappointed if they went with any name but the Jets! Manitoba Jets if it must be that way, but Winnipeg Jets would be the best choice!
The Jets were the first club team to beat the Soviets, they won AVCO cups and probably would have won a Stanley Cup if they didn’t come up against Gretzky’s Oilers in their best years. Selanne set the rookie scoring record for the Jets and who doesn’t remember seeing him shoot his glove out of the air?!
Hockey fans from literally around the world have an attachment to the Jets, and I know because when I have worn my Jets jersey to the Olympics and abroad I feel like I can understand why Hollywood stars complain about being TOO famous! People from all over the world just have to talk to “the Jets guy” when they see you, and you hear nothing but good things. A new team with a different name simply wouldn’t have this emotional connection with hockey fans around the world, and that is something you can’t measure but certainly has value.
Please True North, give us a chance to raise the roof with the loudest GO JETS GO chant of all time!

The Moose are Chipman's baby and they are the sole reason we may ever get a team back. Grow up and show some respect. The Moose are a first class organization and let's not forget that they produced about 1/3rd of the Canucks who are poised to win the cup this year. Well done Moose!

I respect Chipman but I still don't like the Moose name. Perhaps in some ways it is Chipman who needs to "grow up" and realize that although he has done a good job branding the Moose, there is still a big piece of the population that absolutely would hate the name Moose for their NHL team.

And of course there's the fact that Chipman didn't come up with the Moose name/logo, that was imported from Minnesota. Jets first, something new second, Moose third, in my opinion.

I am not a fan of the Moose name myself. This is not about the name, but about the organization itself. I just don't like the bush league reference and the talk about getting rid of them as if they are a waste of space

I just don't like the bush league reference and the talk about getting rid of them as if they are a waste of space That's fair, and you'll notice I didn't trash the organization nor the job Chipman has done of branding it. My point is, even though it's disrespectful it's comments like these that show how much people dislike the name Moose. It would be nice if people could show more of an appreciation for the Moose (even if their not fans), but I guess my point is these feelings exist, so I think it would be foolish and stubborn of Chipman to go with the Moose name. I agree with the above poster, to me it's Jets first but certainly a new name 2nd and Moose as the worst possible choice.

if you dont like the moose name, i get it, thats fine..but the bitterness, and some comments towards that franchise is a downright disgrace..without the moose and all of the people around them, this opportunity simply doesnt exist in any way at all
the posted comments in the article have very little to do with the organization, and more to do with a random, pointless hatred towards the franchise that made this all possible

LOL wow Haha you'll notice I didn't say this to Chipman! Perhaps I misspoke, but I think your mostly picking apart one part of what I said and not the overall message.... I really only meant it if it's true what some people have suggested --> that Chipman wants to keep the name Moose because he is proud of what he has done with it. I have no idea if that's true and although I can understand it to some extent, I would hope and assume that Mr. Chipman is a big enough man to realize we will be proud of his efforts to bring back the NHL and he doesn't need to use the name Moose to make it his team.
