The National Hockey League and Matthew Hulsizer appear to have a supporter when it comes to settling their differences with the Goldwater Institute over the fate of the Phoenix Coytoes. Senator John McCain spoke to a Phoenix radio station on Friday and said that he was "very unhappy" with the way that Goldwater Institute has threatened to sue if the city and Hulsizer sign off on a deal that would see Glendale selling bonds to pay Hulsizer $100 million. In turn, Hulsizer would pay the city $25 million to reimburse it for losses for the current season and would guarantee any shortfall to the city up to $75 million over the team's 30-year lease of Jobing.com Arena. "Unless the Goldwater Institute understands how important the Coyotes are, it's very likely the Coyotes will leave," McCain told 620 AM Radio. The Republican Senator wants the two sides to sit down together and work something out that will keep the club in Glendale. "I am a proud fiscal conservative, I will match my record against anyone," McCain told the radio station. "To somehow think the Phoenix Coyotes don't need incentives to stay where they are when we are subsidizing all the stadiums for the Cactus League teams, Chase Field, University of Phoenix Stadium, all the stadiums that have been erected all over the country -- I don't like it, but that's the world we live in." McCain also stated that if the Coyotes leave, there would be some significant economic damage to the region. "If the Coyotes leave, we lose 1,000 jobs, the West Valley is harmed very badly economically, the city of Glendale is hurt very badly, the Valley losts its status as a major league player," McCain told the radio station. www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=359529

This has nothing to do with a stadium subsidy. The COG has already built and is paying for jobing.com arena. This is a stadium deal + a free NHL team. McCain needs better staffers he obviously has no idea what this situation really is. To think this man almost became the President of the USA is mind boggling. I am not talking politics but intelligence. This is very strong politicking here. I am actually somewhat surprised that someone like McCain is making these kinds of comments here.
And to think that McCain & GWI are on the same side of the political spectrum.
This whole fiasco has become so ridiculous now there aren't words for it anymore. If the Coyote's stay, the fans of the NHL will likely set the world records for the most spontaneous facepalms & the longest facepalms.
It's probably a good thing that the NHL doesn't get any airtime down south because this looks really bad. The COG won't release their legal opinions for scrutiny , McCain is barking at GWI to back off (even though the deal may not be constitutional), yet there are probably 4 other places (Winnipeg being #1) which would be happy to host an NHL team with a tenth of the drama that they're seeing in Phoenix.
PLEASE end this now, one way or another. I've been on this roller coaster too long (way longer than my "joined" date) and I feel my cookies coming up.

It is getting old. CoG can't have what it wants. People don't buy tickets = nobody want to own the team.
Since when is the NHL only considered a subsidy (government funded tenant) for a failing shopping center. It has NOTHING to do with hockey. This whole thing is beyond ridiculous. I am ashamed for the NHL for having taking this route to nowhere and not having the fortitude to change direction years ago.
At the end of the day the ECHL team will generate the same outcome minus the lawsuits and additional 400+ million in debt payments. It is a no brainer, yet we are still rehashing this same old crap.
John McCain is NOT a fiscal conservative. He should be ashamed to even suggest such a thing. What he says is comparable to a dog fart in the wind. Yeah it might get a few people's attention, but will be forgotten very quickly.

Who cares what McCain wants... he's irrelevant. Irrelevant in this situation because he has little or no influence upon the people fighting CoG. But every time a Senator steps into the equation, it will make waves in the media regardless of his ability to solve the problem.

More McCain posturing: www.azcentral.com/arizonarepublic/local/articles/2011/03/27/20110327nowicki-mccain-intensifies-goldwater-criticism.htmlNowicki: McCain intensifies Goldwater criticism by Dan Nowicki, columnist - Mar. 27, 2011 12:00 AM The Arizona Republic U.S. Sen. John McCain has intensified his criticism of the Goldwater Institute for its "disgraceful" refusal to negotiate with Chicago investor Matthew Hulsizer on his pending purchase of the Phoenix Coyotes. McCain, R-Ariz., told The Arizona Republic Friday that the high-stakes deal is on the verge of collapsing because of what he characterized as "basically blackmailing by the Goldwater Institute." "It's not their role to decide whether the Coyotes should stay in (the Phoenix area) or not," McCain said of the Phoenix-based, libertarian-leaning watchdog group. "No one elected them." Glendale hopes to sell bonds to raise $100 million to help Hulsizer buy the Coyotes from the National Hockey League and keep the team playing at the city's Jobing.com Arena. The Goldwater Institute has signaled that it will challenge the arrangement in court as a violation of the Arizona Constitution. Hulsizer responded by guaranteeing that the team will pay Glendale $75 million in revenue over the course of a 30-year arena lease and that he will cover another $25 million that the city agreed to give the NHL to help offset the Coyotes' financial losses. Goldwater Institute president Darcy Olsen has said the latest overture would not resolve the legal concerns. McCain counters that former Arizona Attorney General Grant Woods, a longtime friend and political ally of his, says it would. One Goldwater Institute official questioned McCain's stance, given his long crusade against government waste. "It's disappointing that someone who has made such a career fighting pork in Washington, D.C., is so willing to support the city of Glendale shoveling $100 million into a Chicago businessman's pocket," said Clint Bolick, the institute's litigation director. "We think it's a bit inconsistent. If he wants the Coyotes to stay, he certainly could consider putting together a group that would buy it on terms that are more favorable to the taxpayers of Glendale." McCain is a well-known fan of the Coyotes and other Arizona pro-sports teams, but he said that's not why he weighed in. "The point is they are going to lose a thousand jobs," McCain said. "A non-elected organization is going to cause it." In other developments: - McCain and U.S. Sen. Jon Kyl, R-Ariz., plan to reintroduce their 10-point border-security plan from last year. And they may have a new House sponsor: U.S. Rep. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., a candidate for the retiring Kyl's seat who last week renounced his longtime support for comprehensive immigration reform and took a harder, pro-enforcement stance. "I didn't ask him specifically, but I am confident that he will," said McCain, who also once championed comprehensive reform. "I don't think it's in any way counter to Congressman Flake's position on the issues. He has always said we need to get the border secured." Matt Specht, Flake's chief of staff, said as of Friday details were still being worked out. - Former U.S. Rep. Tom Tancredo, R-Colo., an anti-illegal-immigration border hawk, dismissed Flake's conversion as "a load of baloney." In a Friday e-mail to supporters, Tancredo declared that defeating Flake will be a top priority of his Team America political-action committee Read more: www.azcentral.com/arizonarepublic/local/articles/2011/03/27/20110327nowicki-mccain-intensifies-goldwater-criticism.html#ixzz1HmAokcGw
