With Westman Place unavailable due to the annual Royal Manitoba Winter Fair, the Wheat Kings have booked the MTS Centre in Winnipeg on Monday, March 28 and Thursday, March 31 for Games 3 and 4 of their first-round series. If a Game 6 is needed, it would be played Monday, April 4 at the MTS Centre.

Could be worse. Here in WBS we played the first month and a half of the team's existence on the road - didn't get a home game until November 17th 1999 (we steamrolled the old Kentucky Thoroughblades 5-2) and hadn't won until November 3 (at Hamilton).

Winnipeg should get its own WHL team for next year and a rivalry with the Wheat Kings...

You can say that for just about every single city in Canada. Edmonton, Calgary, Vancouver, Hamilton, Toronto, Montreal, etc. have all failed numerous times at Junior hockey. The difference is nearly all those cities were given another chance once Junior hockey (WHL, etc) became popular in the large markets in the mid 1990's. If Winnipeg had a WHL team, it would probably be a better draw than the AHL Moose. Just look at the Vancouver Giants, Calgary Hitmen, Quebec's QMJHL team, etc. There are the same markets who drew next to nobody in the early 80's, and were forced to move to smaller centres.

Yeah, I think a WHL team in Winnipeg would be pretty successful nowadays.

Yeah, I think a WHL team in Winnipeg would be pretty successful nowadays. All these large Canadian cities have CHL teams (WHL, OHL, QMJHL): Halifax, Quebec City, Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, London, Windsor, Regina, Saskatoon, Edmonton, Calgary and Vancouver. The only large cities not in the list are Hamilton and Winnipeg. This is embarrassing. Frankly I'd rather go to a WHL game with a Winnipeg team than an AHL game. And, by the way, the Winnipeg Jets did not start in the WHA, they started in the WHL, as the Junior Jets, when it was the WJHL.

I would support a WHL team in Winnipeg but let's call a spade a spade - there is no way it is better than the AHL.

Would go to these games if they were playing the Raiders. After having a friend play on Prince Albert awhile back, I cannot bring myself to cheer for the Wheaties, their biggest rival. I do love WHL hockey though. Maybe Ill just go watch for the hell of it.

I would support a WHL team in Winnipeg but let's call a spade a spade - there is no way it is better than the AHL. why are you AHL guys always so insecure to point out that the AHL is "better" then the WHL/CHL. if you are taking about who would win in a hockey game, a AHL team or a CHL team, of course the AHL team would win (most of the time). there are 60 CHL teams and 30?? AHL teams. personally tho i find juniors 10000 times more exciting. in the last 5 years i have seen eberle, hall, getzlaf, schenn and ward just to name a few. but if you want to call a spade a spade we might as well call out the AHL for being a league of wash ups and nobodies.

Your last line is so wrong. 80% of current NHL players honed their skills in the A. You would have been correct if describing the defunct IHL that was washups.

Michael Grabner, Cory Schneider and Alex Burrows all from the Moose the last five years.
Excitement is a hard thing to quantify. There have been some stinkers in the NHL too and we are all excited for that league to come back.
I like the AHL better. The players are more refined and the systems are better executed. The hockey is a little more clean.
I'm still going to one of these games (was born in Medicine Hat and lived there as infant and thus have a soft-spot for the Tigers), but the quality of play isn't as good as the AHL.
