Basically: "It smacks of improvisation. This is not new money for the city because it asks us to sacrifice money for infrastructure already provided for this equipment, "says Paul-Christian Nolin, press the mayor of Quebec. Transit also be hurt because some of its funding comes from these transfers.
They want new money for the arena, not the option to use other money for it.

Regardless Stephen Harper has to be VERY carefull about how much federal money goes into that arena, it could have big repreucussions.

I find it interesting that people are so quick to point to how quiet True North is as a great sign of respect for the NHL and how it must mean things look good "behind the scenes" and that "this is how the NHL prefers to do business".
Yet, no one is being "quiet" in Quebec. Everyone is out there talking about wanting an NHL franchise, and trying to find money to build an arena for the sole purpose of attracting an NHL franchise. And it doesnt seem to bother the NHL at all.

I wonder if it's because Winnipeg is a real possibility RIGHT NOW, so they don't want to draw more attention to the fact that they could / should move those sun belt teams immediately. However, in Quebec's case, I think it works in the NHL's favour to have Quebec making a lot of noise, because it's good PR for them. To anyone who says that the league is failing - it's going bankrupt, they can say - Look, there is still interest. People still want to join!

To anyone who says that the league is failing - it's going bankrupt, they can say - Look, there is still interest. People still want to join! When you are confident that you will be picked next for a scrub game of hockey, you have no need to make noise at the government and ownership level. But when you know you aren't the best positioned choice, you start to yell, "pick me, Pick me!". I have to believe that if TNSE wanted our Mayor to go rabid or the Premier for that matter, they would champion his cause because it would play to their political advantage. This can't be lost on any of us. So because that hasn't happen except for the PC party a full election ago, it has to be because TNSE has asked them all to stay quiet, stay their course. In fact, a similar dialogue might have happened with DF and MC. It would be easy for DF to become "chief cheerleader" to bring attention to MC's NHL campaign. Something along the lines of "just say the word, Mr. Chipman!" (Darren you need not breach any confidentiality over this point.) But if anything since about 2008 DF hasn't went full bore doing so. Yes Quebec City had a 30,000 to 60,00 Blue March recently. But Winnipeg had 35,000 fans trying to save their team in the mid 1990's. And here's where the rubber meets the road: Manitoban fans gave away over $11 to 13 million (depending which report you believe) of their own money to help raise the cash to save the team. Running a very successful AHL and concert business for 15 years with the books to prove it all the while rubbing shoulders with NHL brass is another huge advantage for TNSE. Those things my friends are why Mark Chipman need not trumpet how good they are. Chris
