If its the thrashers who come to the peg, is it still a realistic possibility for season 2011-12? Can anyone come up with a non bias/neutral opinion?

Good question, which I was just going to ask because of a reply to my post in another thread. Why do people think the current lease owner/manager wouldn't offer up a lease to a new NHL team, which would fill their building 41 nights a yr? Even the idea that this could happen could easily delay a Trasher move for a season or 3.

I think it's very unrealistic. The current owners would first want to try to find someone who would just buy the team from them and play in their arena. Obviously they'd rather have that then the team move. The NHL would also require them to first look for a local buyer.
Now the question is are these things already happening but just not publicly?

If its the thrashers who come to the peg, is it still a realistic possibility for season 2011-12? Can anyone come up with a non bias/neutral opinion? unless someone has inside knowledge how would they know if it was realistic or not?? there are a few things that we know or rather think we know: -- Atlanta Spirit is looking for investors in their group or for someone to buy the Thrashers outright... -- there have been plenty of rumours linking TNSE with the Thrashers -- the Thrashers ownership has repeatedly denied that they have had any discussions with any group looking to relocate the Thrashers -- the Thrashers are losing 10s of millions each year and have terrible attendance and local TV ratings... -- the Thrashers keep failing to sign their marquee players -- the arena lease binds the NBA Hawks, not the Thrashers -- the naming rights agreement for Philips Arena is very lucrative, paying millions per year, but is based on the arena housing both an NBA and NHL team... -- the Philips arena is the only viable NHL arena in Atlanta -- the 7 year no-relocation requirement btw the NHL and the Thrashers has expired or will do so at the end of this season... -- the Thrashers ownership group is divided... -- the NBA Hawks don't do very well either... Now for speculation... -- by getting rid of the Thrashers, Atlanta Spirit Group could a) obtain a cash infusion of $170 million, b) stop losing $20 million per year or so on the Thrashers, c) consolidate all of the corporate and other support behind the Hawks rather than dividing it between two franchises... -- now, Atlanta Spirit might want someone to take over the Thrashers and play out of Philips Arena, but in order to make that work they would have to provide a sub-lease with very favourable terms, which would likely bite into their corporate $$, sponsorships, etc... -- the naming rights agreement could be renegotiated; it happens all the time....

Supposedly, Don Waddell has said that they are obligated to keep the team in Atlanta for several more years.

Supposedly, Don Waddell has said that they are obligated to keep the team in Atlanta for several more years. there is a standard NHL requirement for new NHL owners and that is they cannot relocate the franchise for 7 years...when did Atlanta Spirit purchase the Thrashers?

I'm only telling you what people in Atlanta have stated with respect to this issue. I don't know how accurate it is or not.

Why do we keep making threads about the same thing?

I think everything Wagner has pointed out can only lead to one conclusion:
--> The Thrashers are destined to leave Atlanta.
But the question still remains, is it realistic to believe it will be in time for the 2011/2012 season?
As Wagner said, really none of us can know anything about that for sure, unless we somehow know a member of the Atlanta Spirit Group.
But I would say, that in my opinion, it seems unlikely. Because of the precendents the NHL has intentionally tried to set in recent years, I would guess that they would require Atlanta to publicly search for interested local buyers, before putting the team up for sale. Even if this would be an excercise in futility (which from what we at least think we know, it seems it would be), I just think the NHL will require it before a sale can be made to move the team.
Here's 3 things that I'm hoping for though:
1) The Coyotes deal falls through, and none of this matters as the Jets come back home. 2) We hear something publicly from Atlanta in the near future along the lines of "We need to find a local buyer for this team, or Atlanta could risk losing the Thrashers". 3) I'm wrong, and we are all given a surprise gift over the summer, leading to the biggest surprise party in the history of Winnipeg!
Go Jets Go everyone

Might not last as long as PHX but I don't think the NHL will walk away from an international city as big as Greater Toronto, the Regional leader of the fastest growing part of the US, more regional and national HQs than can be mentioned and home to international corp giants like Delta, UPS, Coke, Home Depot, Rubbermaid, CNN, AT&T Mobile, Georgia-Pacific, Arbys, Chick-fil-A, NCR, etc. The Thrashers are not just going to pick up and run away quickly and NHL governers from Edmonton to Montreal will not rush this through.
