Major funding shortage for new Bomber stadiumCreswin Properties has briefed the stakeholders in the new football stadium project and there is a major shortage of funding. The stakeholders were given a final price for the proposed stadium with all promised amenities, including a partial roof with coveragefor 80 per cent of the building's seats. Sources say the price is more than $160 million and the stakeholders are now huddling to determine what comes next. The project will require extra money or the design could be altered to make the stadium fit the $115-million budget used to put together the existing funding package. There is concern the project is in danger of being scrapped altogether. Bombers chair Bill Watchorn confirmed the stakeholders have been given a report from Creswin and he expects them to meet and make an announcement next week. The project stakeholders -- the city, the province, the U of M, the Blue Bombers and Creswin -- originally signed a memo of understanding stating Creswin would build a stadium for $115 million. www.winnipegfreepress.com/breakingnews/By-Gary-Lawless----106726364.html

Boy, it sure is embarassing to be a Winnipeger sometimes. As Bob Irving pointed out on the radio, "If this thing does not get done, we will be the laughing stock of the country". I say, More than ususal?!

Well, it's funny how when I reported this almost a Month ago; The mood regarding the completion of the project was the same as it is now that this is made official.
Let's not forget; 160-180 Million is the cost of Raw Materials only. ( Concrete, Cable Tray, Steel, etc...) However; they haven't even begun to account for costs of paying a Contractor to actually BUILD it! That'll be another 15..20...25 Million.

I've spoken to some of the companies that were putting bids together for it and the figures I heard were upwards of 190 million.

Well, considering my companies bid was close to 3 Million alone....it was quite obvious this would run WAY over. It was a bit ridiculous to believe they could build this 'State of the Art' Stadium or $115 Million to begin with......

Something tells me they're just going to end up renovating the old one...although there is an election coming up. Maybe they could let Hydro build BiPole 3 on the east side of the lake and dip into some the $600,000,000+ that would be saved there.

It they are going to spend near $200 Million then they should build something similar to the Fargo Dome so it can be used 365 days a year. Otherwise I agree with Ric O. Guys at coffee today suggested taking off the upper deck on the old stadium and making it a true bowl stadium. They can add multilevel parking garages around the field and practice facility where the old Winnipeg Arena was since space is at a premium near there. Fix the bathrooms and you have a useful stadium for a tenant who uses it for only minimum 8 games a year. As to the hole in the ground at the current site...a shovel should have never been in the ground until Creswin put in a cash deposit on the project.

I agree with everything you said except one thing... the troughs are the best part about the stadium. Long live the trough!

I agree, the troughs are very efficient. They were the precursors to the waterless urinals you see popping up everywhere. But with TNSE's agreement to be the only covered sports facility for large events my argument has no legs to stand on. Somehow we have to get TNSE involved in a new covered Stadium.

the $115 mil figure was BS from the start. I could never see an adequate, let alone "world class", facility being built for that amount. $170-$200 million is what I'm guessing the final tab will run. I also wouldn't be shocked to see this done entirely through government money, too. No Asper whatsoever.

Would Chipman (perhaps with Thomson, as you suggested, Hobble) have any interest in stepping in in place of Asper/Creswin?

Would Chipman (perhaps with Thomson, as you suggested, Hobble) have any interest in stepping in in place of Asper/Creswin? Highly doubt it! They are already busy enough trying to Run an NHL Franchise, Property Development around the MTSC, etc.... Football isn't their game just as Hockey & Baseball are not Bettman's

Honestly, I kind of hope they scrap the idea altogether and renovate the old stadium.
Not only is the old stadium a Winnipeg landmark, but I hate the location of the new stadium on Bison drive more than words can describe. It's going to completely jam the traffic on game nights because streets like Pembina, Bison and University Crescent just cannot handle that much traffic.
Plus I was hoping they'd use the location of a new stadium as a way of revitalizing a older part of the city (like the MTS Center did for downtown). Most new suburbs being developed are already on the south end of the city (Waverley West, Bridgewater Forest, etc), so it's not like people aren't going there. I know the location was chosen at the U of M because they pitched in for the cost so that the Bisons can also play games there, but I'd rather they build it at the West end of the city at the Bannatyne Campus than the Fort Garry campus, if they need to build it on University property at all.

I'm guessing you live near there?! I don't know, this all comes down to we would all like it to be closer to where we live. Living in Transcona I think the new location sucks monkey butt, but I understand that it makes sense so that it will at least get used more often (2 teams can play there instead of 1 so at least that's like close to 20 nights a year it has a purpose!). So basically, if I had my vote I would say put it in Transcona so I can walk home drunk from the games, but I can see how the U of M site makes sense. I still think they should either make it darn nice or just spend the minimum on keeping the old stadium going for a while though, and they are definately inflating what that would cost to justify the new stadium. The thing hasn't fallen over yet, so I'm sure for a couple of million dollars it could last a few more years.
