via Chrisd.ca: www.chrisd.ca/blog/28476/1290-cfrw-sports-radio-station-format-change/1290 CFRW will cease its oldies music format and become an all-sports radio station, ChrisD.ca has learned. Sports Radio 1290 will debut soon, according to program director Chris Brooke, who confirmed the switch Friday afternoon. No firm date has been set for when the new station will launch. CFRW first went to air in 1963 and is most well-known for its popular morning show featuring Don Percy. The station is the host AM broadcaster for the Winnipeg Goldeyes. --- Wonder what will happen with Bomber and Moose broadcasts, as well as any, ahem, future Manitoba pro sports teams...

When the heck did the once mighty 13 CFRW start using those call letters again?I gave up on that station when they switched to 1290 Fox around 1986.I can still remember the uproar that format change caused in Jr High. The 13 CFRW vs 92 Citi radio wars were good time's back in the day.

1290's corporate parents better be prepared to step up and bid for the broadcasting rights of the local teams - otherwise don't even bother. Just stick with the good time oldies instead.

Amen to that! I want some local sports shows where they talk about the Jets and Bombers. It'll probably end up being a bunch of syndicated radio shows from ESPN, Fox Sports (which are ok in the right proportion) and a bunch of offensive filler from Toronto.

I am looking forward to this big time! I spend alot of my day driving and I'm sick of listening to Toronto sports shows on the satellite radio, although CBC Hockey Night In Canada radio is pretty good.

Great news! Other large cites, Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal all have all-sports radio stations. It's about time Winnipeg joined the big six!
I wonder if we are going to go back to having our KY58 oldies station again???

Its interesting that CFRW is owned by CTVglobemedia, a firm owned by David Thomson (although maybe CFRW was included in what Bell just purchased).
