To a certain degree, politicians have held Wang hostage. But even as the lifelong Long Islander suffers through a process that has become a cruel maze, he has the ability to take immediate control. He can announce tomorrow that he is taking up Jeff Wilpon's offer and is moving the Islanders to a new facility in Queens the moment the lease at the Coliseum expires. The owner can announce that. He does not need approval from the league, which would view an Islanders' move into the five boroughs no differently than the Devils' move from the Meadowlands to Newark. He can re-energize the franchise, and transform it into a destination location. Wang can do that any time he wishes. Unless, of course, he believes that once he takes the Islanders off the Island, moving to Queens is no different than moving to Kansas City or Quebec. If Wang believes that, now is the time to let everyone know. Read more: www.nypost.com/p/sports/islanders/stay_or_go_isles_fans_need_to_know_tjbmsoDTcAKTQjKRXXbMfP/1#ixzz0tWJBGc8nOr Winnipeg?

I really do not want the Islanders to move NOR do I belive they will. I'm hoping they are on the current site ( with new Arena ) for the long-term. There are too many other franchises that DO NOT BELONG to be where they are in which we should get. ( And know we will...

I don't remember exactly but I believe when Bettman was asked about the NYI, Bettman's response was something like the team has a lease until 2012. Does that sound familar to anyone else?

The problem is, I can't see Wang moving the Isles to Canada.
KC or LV maybe, but not Quebec City or Hamilton (obviously Winnipeg isn't an option because of TNSE).
Nonetheless, it sure seems like work is behind done behind the scenes by the NHL to move teams to Winnipeg (TNSE) and Quebec (Quebecor), so maybe he wouldn't have a choice to move them up here anyways.

I'm a Rangers fan, and I would hate seeing the Islanders move.
Fortunately, I don't see the Islanders moving anywhere too far away from where the Coliseum is now. I read somewhere that the Islanders and Rangers have an agreement where the Isles can move anywhere on LI without the Rangers complaining about territory rights.. this includes Brooklyn and Queens, which gives the Isles 2 options (the Barclays Center in Brooklyn which is due to go up soon...hopefully...and the potential site in Queens) if the Lighthouse Project falls through. I will be shocked and saddened if the Islanders wind up moving out of NY entirely, for many reasons (loss of a rival and an easy ticket to a hockey game/KC as the potential site)

Wang hasn't begun to play hardball yet. It's far from over.

i grew up in ny, and lived on long island for 20 years.i have been an islanders fan since gillies beat up shultz. wang only bought the team for the real estate. it is transparent.once he is sure the real estate is a no go, he'll sell. ny doesnt need three teams. the rangers are certainly not moving, and the devils just got a new rink. the writing is on the wall. they're gone.i say move em.....to winnipeg.

I think maybe Tavares could be their Crosby, he just needs to pick it up... They don't have that bad of a team, just poor management and stuff...

I agree with most of the posters here. If a team is going to move, I'd much rather see it happen to one of the useless sunbelt teams with zero attendance in a non-hockey market than a team like the Islanders (in a state that can actually get snow!) with a lot of strong history behind it.

Am beyond caring where the team comes from, just want it here for fall 2011! And Tavares is NO Crosby, or Toews. He's a solid goal scorer and that be all!

I'm glad the Rangers are nice enough to let their fellow/rival NY-metro team move anywhere in LI, even in Brooklyn and Queens without complaining! I guess they have nothing to fear as NYC's hockey fans are still largely Rangers fans to the core anyway! And I guess they see some competition as a bit of a good thing... ;D

Yes there is interest for hockey here the problem is the same as the problem was in Hartford, we're right between NYC and Philly and most of the people in the Southern Half of the State are Flyer fans and some people in Northern NJ are Ranger fans, but still more Devil fans. We have no territory. Our team is 10th in revenue anyway, so the Devils won't move anytime soon anyway.

^Still doesn't mean that they're gonna move anytime soon ticket prices are very high too unlike in places like Phoenix and Atlanta.
Average price for a Devils ticket is $110.91
But I think we should agree that the Devils & Islanders should stay where they are with all the history that they've had.

I would like to say that I am posting this here because it seems like the most likely spot for it. As many people have been saying it appears Phoenix is not coming to Winnipeg nor is it Atlanta or an expansion team then think about the following:
1. Phoenix remains in Glendale 2. Atlanta remains in Atlanta 3. NY Islanders begin play in Winnipeg for the 2011-2012 season
Yes this may sound crazy but here are the reasons: 1. Wang appears to want out 2. No local buyers have come forward with capital (remember the Jets) 3. An aging arena with all apparant plans to build a new one in dissarray (see Jets) 4. A team under current CBA not eligible for revenue sharing 5. Attendance issues and a lease which does not include concessions or parking 6. A team that continues to lose money despite being near the CAP floor 7. A market which is already served by several other NHL teams meaning any national TV contract won't be hampered by the Islanders leaving
How will it work:
1. The NHL purchases the team from Mr. Wang 2. TNSE purchses the team from the NHL currently valued at $151 million by Forbes. This is only a guideline for purchase price as there may be a relocation fee. 3. TNSE pays Mr.Wang $$$$ for him to get out of the lease and any shortfall is picked up by Mr. Wang. Considering the amount of money the franchise is losing and will lose until the lease expires in 2015 this is actually a good deal for Mr. Wang
TNSE by buying the franchise from the NHL only receives the team itself and the league retains the Islanders "brand." No franchise history or records become the property of the new team.
By the NHL retaining the Islanders "brand" it allows for the team to be resurected at a time that a new arena is completed somewhere in the NY area and a new ownership team is in place. A new CBA will also be in place by then. Think Cleveland Browns.
I know it sounds crazy but I have been called far worse. Let me know how crazy it is. Just imagine Tavares as the cornerstone of the franchise and proper management teams in place.
