On the Quebec vs. Winnipeg thing... let's get them both in the league. The Nordiques would become my 2nd favourite team.
I agree with KillerBrew and others about selling the Thrashers separately. There is no way the team can survive with adding rent to everything else and likely getting very little in concession, parking, etc... However, you just never know with the NHL. Bettman is magical in the way he can convince people to pay for losses of these types of teams. I am not anti-Bettman and I do believe that he is not dead set against Winnipeg getting back in, however I also know that no teams have moved for quite some time and its not like the losses of these teams are a new thing.
Good news though.

I think what this means is that Thomson & Chipman will have their pick of franchises come January 2011.
I know that Atlanta Spirit denied these rumours, but what would you expect them to do?
Things are really looking good for 2011!

This sounds great for 2011.
The largest difference between the Thrashers & the Coyotes is the arena, the COG has the liability for their arena & have significant funds invested in Westgate...they need the Coyotes to stay & are willing to stick their necks out a little bit to achieve that.
For these guys, if the article is true, the arena is privately owned, attached to the Hawks, and are being sold seperately from the Thrashers! I cannot see why any government in Atlanta or Georgia would be willing to step in on this one.
The only thing is that some investor may think hockey could work in Atlanta & step in to buy the team...the problem is that they would have to negotiate a lease with the new owner of the arena. Bad deal for $30 million/year loss.
Keep an eye on this one folks. I don't know much about the Thrashers (average attendance, # of season ticket holders, etc.) but they would look good at the MTS centre as well.

Remember that just because they're being sold separately doesn't mean that someone couldn't buy both teams and the arena all at once. Someone earlier said that the owner of the Hawks wouldn't want competition for entertainment dollars, but at the same time they might want another tenant for the arena they would be acquiring.

I think its possible that any new owner in Atlanta may want to use the Houston model, where the Toyota Centre has an NBA and AHL team for tenants.

Wanting a second tennant is nice. Not if it costs you $30 million per year in losses, thus bringing down the value and prestige of your over-all business. There is a reason the Hawks and Arena are being sold together and the Thrashers separately. The owners obviously anticipate greater interest in Hawks/Arena without the albotross of the Thrashers and expect more interest in Thrashers separeatley ie. not tied to a lease. ie. perfect for relocation.
And you better believe where there is smoke, there is fire - this team was tied to TN and everyone denied it and now they are publicly for sale (more or less)? Yeah, uh huh.

kinda makes you want the coyotes thing to wrap up quickly - give Ice Edge its financial disaster - and then buy the Thrashers in the fall for certain relocation in 2011. The price should be less than the $165-$170 million rumoured to be the price of the Yotes. Might be able to get them for $140 or less.
Good young squad with Kane, Bogosian, Little, Bergfors, etc. Hmmmmm... A fall/winter sale might also swing the team into a downward spiral - lottery pick in 2011 sound inviting?

In some ways I would prefer Atlanta....let Ice Edge hemmorage cash until they are all living in the same van in Moncton

...back to the original plan. but if phoenix fetches 160...atlanta will be AT LEAST the same price...or more. phoenix is unmoveable, atlanta isn't.

Did I read that right. They bought the Hawks/Thrashers AND arena for 250m in 2004. So basically they bought a NBA team and arena and got the Thrashers for FREE. Kind of like a Mc Happy Meal.
