Now this will not, nor is it intended to get anyone into a frenzy, but......small renos have started.
Yesterday and today was "Open Door Winnipeg" -- a weekend where various buildings open their doors for tours.
MTSC was one of the buildings participating, so I took my family for the tour.
Well, on the third level, there was a lot of commotion and signs of "construction". Drywall ripped down, painting, carpentry, etc.
Anyway, the tour guide explained that the concourse is too small when the upper deck is in fact utilized, so they were "knocking down" walls throughout to widen it at several points.
This is basically what they are doing. They are "punching out" walls where there is space "under the stands". In about a dozen spots, they will now be able to fit the concession carts under the stands to allow for a wider concourse.
Like I said, nothing much, but it is in fact something.....something that is going on right now and something to address the flow of people on the third level.
One interesting point the tour guide made was the fact that the third level is only used about 5 times a year for Moose games and again for a few concerts.
So, why the need to do these renos now???
Anyway, a sign is a sign I suppose.

Yes, I believe I reported this over a month ago.
Nice to see Reno's are coming along.

Thanks for keeping us in the loop on what's going on with MTSC believer. Usually this MTSC stuff is highly confidential and privileged info. I meant to go and take a look myself but didn't get a chance to make it down there.

Sounds good.
I'm guessing TNSE took these measures just in case the Coyotes did (do?) come to Winnipeg for next season.

So, why the need to do these renos now??? The renos are going ahead as scheduled. Up to $40M over the next 3 years. It includes the upper concourse, removing some seats for NHL stipulated camera positions, Press box and broadcasting upgrades.

Jimi, would they be goinmg ahead with these renos regardless of a possible NHL return, or is this a sign of the high confidence level we will have an NHL franchise here within the next 1 - 2 years?

^ i am going to answer my own question. No, Frank, they would not be doing these renos right now because don't forget, the upper bowl is closed off for Moose games most of the time. I suspect that these renos are being done because they are quite confident that they will have a need for more concessions and space due to the large crowds that will be attending National Hockey League games.

I speculate more....perhaps in January, the NHL sent its cronies to Wpg to check things out. They came up with some needs that the NHL wants in its rinks. Now TNSE is going along with the recommendations, to make us look even better to the NHL.....or perhaps in preperation for a team.
The fact it is going on this summer makes me wonder, as if they werent going to get a team for a cpl years, perhaps it would be done when we were guarenteed a team?
Otherwise whats the point if its only opened up for like 20 nights a year?

I agree, TNSE must feel very confident in their chances in acquiring the Coyotes or another team in the next 1-3 years. It really makes you wonder what they know that we don't, or rather what is going on behind the scenes that hasn't and probably will never be reported. There's speculation that Atlanta won't move and Bettman said that other teams are stable, but obviously that can't be the case if TNSE feels this confident in their chances.

The renos shouldn't be a surprise in light of what Bettman has said, that we have the owner, the building and the market. So they have to add space for the upper deck concessions, whether we get a team for the 2010-11 season or the 2011-12 season. So now is a good time to start the renos, for the NHL's return. HF Boards also says they are adding more washrooms, which is a little more expensive than just clearing out space for concession carts. This gives more merit for the idea that it's for the NHL's return. It's not for the Moose, that's for sure, unless they are predicting a number of consecutive years in the AHL final like Hershey, which I highly doubt. So it's obvious to me it's for the NHL's return. It's one more sign of confidence that the NHL is coming back soon.

Coug.... the only question I have about the renos going on now, is why this summer, why start now. If they are going to invest 20 mill in renos to make things bigger and to make more washrooms, how does that make sense unless the True North guys have some sort of agreement that a team will be coming.
If it was me, and I was Chipman, and had been told we are next in line, I would say awesome, but I am not going to change the rink until I am told, you ARE getting a team. You wouldnt renovate a home to a tenants specifications if they were guarenteed to move in.
I think they have an agreement for a 3 year deal. the NHL will be here within 3 years. Or chipman is spending 20 mill for fun.

Renos are not for fun, they are for two reasons... They have other events in the building besides hockey games.. They need this for concerts and all other events etc. They also need the additional press box which is being added if they are going to attact juniors etc...
This is in line with needed upgrades and for the possible return of NHL... They would have done this regardless...

I'm sure that True North is confident enough that an NHL team will be in Winnipeg within the next 1-2 years that they may as well get some renovations done now. I'm sure the plan is to get some things done next summer as well (press box). Why leave it all to next summer? If the Moose made the Calder Cup Finals that would mean you can't even start renovations until late June. NHL training camp starts labour day - not nearly enough time to get everything done they want to get done.
