PROS:
Katz - knows the sports business, populist approach to governing, good at making deals
Wasylycia-Leis - likes government spending and might help subsidize the team or MTSC renovations
CONS:
Katz - probably doesn't want competition for the baseball team he owns
Wasylycia-Leis - probably not a sports fan so has no personal interest in seeing the NHL return
So which mayoral candidate will help us more with getting the NHL back? Or does it not really matter either way?
(Remember, this poll is not about who you like best or which party you support - it is all about who will do the most to bring the NHL back!)

I have no doubt in my mind Katz and Doer had already got together with Chipman & CO. to discuss what they may be needed to do in order to make it happen. With Doer out, Katz i'm sure is the guy. He's been positive & wants it to happen.
More importantly; he's a SPORTS fan and knows how much the NHL means to this city. on the other hand, Judy i'm sure is smart, etc..but doesn't exactly strike me as someone who rates the NHL highly on Winnipeg's map.
I have no clue if she's for or against but, due to her constituency representation; I think she's ones of those people that would rather see "funding" go to help build houses for the drunks...I mean homeless than create infrastructure around the NHL MTS Centre.

I definitely say Katz.
Bill Norrie came out today in favour of Wasylicia-Leis. Of course Bill Norrie was the mayor in the early '80's who pushed Portage Place mall through for North Portage development, rather than supporting the Arena proposal for the Jets.
Norrie was a man of little vision and I believe he would support a candidate with a vision that most closely matches his own.

Irrelevent to me for obvious reasons. I wonder which one will the be the first to use the ROTJ in their Campaign.

I don't see how either would have a bearing on us getting a team back. There is ZERO way the public would allow tax dollars to subsidize billionaire owners and millionaire players. It's not going to happen on either candidate's watch.
But I will be voting for Katz again as I think he's done a pretty decent job so far.

I can't believe that there is even consideration for anyone other than Katz.... but I guess we live in a democracy.
Sam Katz has positioned this city so well, in lieu of an ailing provincial government. This is also a terrible attempt by the NDP to try and control power in city hall, which should be non-partisan. I would suspect that you'll see a very large amount of funding and advertising on her part. My question is who is funding her? Not a coincidence!
Winnipeggers have become OK with the status Quo... or content with mediocrity. Sam has always strived to make improvements to what exists. He challenges facts and issues, instead of blinding an eye.
Winnipeg completely avoided a near world-wide recession, while other parts of Manitoba saw great job losses, don't let the NDP ad campaigns lead you to believe it was their doing we did well.
Sam Katz is our man! Keep up the good work Sam, you have my vote. No questions!

Why are we even considering what a mayor (or premier, for that matter) can do for the ROTJ campaign? We need to remember the lessons from 15 years ago, where we asked the public sector to build a new arena and fund the losses. Look at what that got us. Darren Ford was smart to not involve himself with Hugh McFadyen's failed provincial campaign where one of his promises was to bring the Jets back. Let's leave the public sector completely out of this.

The Mayor just stated on CJOB "coffee with the Katz" that he now firmly believes the NHL will be back in 1-3 years.
I wonder if Judy even knows what NHL stand for.......

I voted for "irrelevant".

I get that it is likely irrelevant... But our cities business and our cities success does play a role in professional sports, and our own lives. If your tired of Winnipeggers striving for mediocrity, and settling for less then lets be proactive. Sam Katz is the right guy for this job and has done a FANTASTIC job in the last 3-4 years.... unless your a hippie, or someone who may loose their overpaid job to a privatised firm that will do it more effectively!!

I'll bite: What are some of the fantastic things Mr. Katz has done in the last 3-4 years?

I am so disappointed in Katz but I do not want a socialist mayor. It also makes me nervous how the NDP are running a slate of candidates in the election. I dont like how one party is trying to usurp control of our city like that.

Pushing forward the Rapid Transit... and he is pushing for an LRT... the province wants to stick to busses... of course they do.
Sam has held his word on the property tax freeze... and for us homeowners, thats huge. In light of holding to his agenda, we haven't had to give up any public services or amenities.
Finding Creative ways to generate revenue by selling naming rights to public facilities and advertising on public equipment.
Fighting to get Winnipeg a bigger piece of the pie. Winnipeg represent about 65% of the provincial population, and the metropolitan area represents closer to 80%... yet the Provincial kickbacks are nowhere near this. Sam is fighting to get more money from the province and rightfully so. Expenditures should be spent proportionally to the areas that generated the revenue.
Sam is also not a socialist... (thank god)
Sam is a big player in developing Winnipeg as a Mainland Centerport.
Sam has a genuine interest in this cities well-being and takes pride in being a successful Winnipegger.
Judy is likely running to be part of the NDP's big picture idea of controlling the province and city hall.
Winnipeg is enjoying such a vibrant and prosperous era, while other regions all over the world are in bankruptcy and great financial turmoil. Its not a coincidence.
I have endorsed Sam Katz since day one of mayoral duties, and will continue to do so. He has done a better job as mayor than any of his successors.
Gord Steeves and Jeff Browaty also do a stand-up job and should be easilly re-elected.
Hopefully Jenni Gerbasi, Russ Wyatt and Lillian Thomas get the heave-ho!

Very well put TSMOF! Thanks Hendrix... I take my city seriously... and I hope everyone else does too. So many Winnipeggers are "OK" to be just that.... "OK" Not cool... Lets be the best, do the best, and represent the best. No more mediocrity!!!

Personally, I went with irrelevant - I don't think it'll make much of a difference one way or the other.
And for anyone quick point fingers at the NDP, remember - we lost the Jets under a Conservative government, while the NDP helped get the MTS Centre built and are about to help bring the Jets back...

Gary Doer was NDP however; boarderline...Conservative. If you look at his policies, etc. He was more "PC" then anything else.

Susan Thompson would be great, just like in 96, she worked hard to get us the Pan American Games that put us on the map, and the benefits can still be felt today from those games.....oh wait, nevermind!
