I guess TN okayed the deal! What a croc of dung! I guess hockey is going crazy in Headingly. Look at the rinks at that end of the city compared to the South. Looks like another Arena scheme money machine for the Chipman group. Just makes me sick! Let me guess the Chipmans will own another arena complex funded witrh public money!

I hope you don't plan on showing up at any NHL games at the MTSC. I really think it's time you just came out of the 1996 closet. Your views have been nothing but negative and pathetic as of late. You might want to consider seeing a therapist ( Not joking )

Cool.
Ice time was hard to come by in St. James and Charleswood when I played hockey. Who wants to take their kid to an 11 p.m. practice on a school night? Or travel halfway across the city for an hour skate at dinner time. I remember going to Balmoral, Manitoba for 9 p.m. ice times on a few occasions.
Plus, teams can no longer rely on outdoor rinks. Clubs won't allow practices in anything less (more?) than -25 weather w/ wind chill (when I played). On top of that, you probably only have a time frame of two months till the ice becomes unusable.

I was thinking a new practice facility as well when I first was reading this lol. They made need a new place for the smaller concerts too, since they will lose some dates at the MTS with the NHL being in control more of the hockey dates.
The Chipman's may need to get more revenue now from somewhere else, with Chevy wanting to pull out from the dealership?

I guess TN okayed the deal! What a croc of dung! I guess hockey is going crazy in Headingley. Technically, the complex will be built inside the city limits. In fact, the Auto Mall, the Red River Ex, assiniboia Downs, and that new sub-division south of Portage Ave are all inside Winnipeg city limits.

The jist of the story is that if anybody else wanted to build a similiar facility anywhere within 100KMS of Winnipeg they would require TN's approval under the no competition clause they have. No other facility could get public funding unless approved by TN. What are the chances TN would approve competition for a 3000 seat arena in Winnipeg?

Can you please name even ONE person / company whose initiative was enacted & then rejected by True North? No you cannot. Please stop writing as you are only harming your ......reputation on this site. You should have taken my advice a long time ago and started your own website for all five True North bashers. Without TN, would we even be TALKING about the NHL's return to Winnipeg? NO Back in the Closet......

No other facility could get public funding unless approved by TN. What are the chances TN would approve competition for a 3000 seat arena in Winnipeg? WHA, There is a clause that states that the city/province can build or financially support other arenas/ice plants within the MTSC catchment area as long as they seat under so many thousand seats. If I remember right it is under 5,000 seats. The reason the public works bureaucrats fought for this clause to be added late in the negotiations was that technically without it, TN would have say over every enclosed space that holds an ice plant in the Greater Winnipeg Area. Since that was not the intention of the governments nor TN, the clause was added with little fanfare. So while your statement above is right, it is not as categorical as your thoughts suggest. Hope this helps clear up any confusion. Chris

$11.8M government funding for hockey complex Staff Writer 29/05/2009 12:15 PM | Comments: 0 Print E–mail Share This Enlarge Image MP Rod Bruinooge, (from left), Premier Gary Doer and President of the Treasury Board Vic Toews announce funding for infrastructure projects. (KEN GIGLIOTTI / WINNIPEG FREE PRESS ) In the same way that clouds have silver linings, the current recession will benefit Winnipeg hockey players. Politicians trying to stimulate the economy this morning announced funding for a new four-rink hockey complex near the west Perimeter Highway. The federal and provincial governments announced funding of $11.8 million towards the total cost of $25 million for the complex, which will be called the True North Mooseplex Hockey Canada Centre. One sheet of ice will have seating for 1,500 people. The funding for the rink complex and other projects is part of an infrastructure spending spree designed to provide jobs. Funding was also announced today for other Manitoba projects, including: * Refurbishment of the Manitoba Centennial Centre * Manitoba Sikh Cultural and Seniors Centre * A new United Way headquarters near the Disraeli Freeway * A Winnipeg Harvest Community Food Distribution and Training Centre * A Salvation Army Multicultural Family Centre "Investing in infrastructure is a triple win for Manitoba," said Premier Doer. "We're stimulating the economy, creating jobs and building a better tomorrow for all Manitobans, and today's announcement reaffirms the province's commitment to building and renewing infrastructure in Manitoba." The rink complex will be a 172,000 square foot multiplex facility that includes such amenities as four North American regulation-sized ice pads, 20 player dressing rooms, along with a pro shop, concession and vending, and 30,000 square feet of leasable space to be used for a restaurant, high performance training facilities and office space for True North Sports & Entertainment, Hockey Canda and Hockey Manitoba. "We are very thankful for the contributions of the federal government of Canada and the Province of Manitoba," said True North Sports & Entertainment chairman Mark Chipman. "Manitobans themselves as a whole are responsible for the success enjoyed thus far by MTS Centre and True North Sports & Entertainment over our first five years. This is our way of re-investing that show of faith in the community." "The True North Hockey Canada Mooseplex results in a further expansion of the True North Sports & Entertainment footprint in Winnipeg with the addition of the four-ice sheet multi-plex into its family of companies," said True North Sports & Entertainment President & CEO, Jim Ludlow. "The True North Hockey Canada Mooseplex will serve as a value-added facility for amateur ice sports in Manitoba as well as a facility for excellence in hockey programming for all players - male and female, young and old - to come and learn about the game and enjoy themselves at all levels of hockey."
