Hmm..how to get people drop it and hijack this thread topic.... (thinks) What do you think the team name should be when we get our team back? Seriously though a bit more on topic and not gossip lol.. I wasn't aware that Belkin was the major supporter of staying in the ATL and the other guys were open to relocation more so. Is there any sort of source claiming that angle? I'm sure each ownership group has their different views, just curious if anyone has good summary/backstory on this group. Either way if it's even close to true it doesn't hurt, really interested in any possible timelines for Atlanta (7 yr no relocation lease is up after this season as far as I'm aware?).. anything else that is of significance and might cause some sort of press release/stir?

It's certainly a topic that invites discussion. Much like conspiracies. Perhaps Jessie Ventura can investigate. Realistically, logic dictates that something occured to cause DF to change the meter. Clearly they "got excited" or "accident" are unlikely. But he has asked us to drop it. Remember, something similar happened when it was reported that Thomson was on the ownership team and DF had promised not to let that news leak on this site. So we should probably drop it with the knowledge that when he can tell us, he will. nicely put but one has to wonder what he was thinkin for those ten minutes it was at 99%. he had to think that the campaign was almost over and was ok letting us know. I highly doubt it was a accident and if it was it would be lame if he didnt post it.

I am sure I recall reading somewhere that Belkin asked to be bought out because the other owners wanted to sell the Thrashers and he was the "hockey guy" of the team.
The NHL has to handle this one carefully. If the current owners of the team want to be out of the hockey business, they wont much care about Bettman's feelings on the matter. We already saw what one person was willing to do when backed into a corner (Moyes) and in the case of the Thrashers, there is no government out cry to keep the team there.
Better to get above market value for the franchise and move it.

Thrashers ownership group settles disputeThe Associated PressThe owners of the Atlanta Hawks and Atlanta Thrashers have settled a long legal battle, resulting in Boston-based Steve Belkin's share being purchased by others in the group and resulting in a sequential purchase of all shares by Winnipeg-based True North Sports and Entertainment Limited. I couldn't help it.

Private property rights trump free speech rights I would think. Hardly censorship. This is not a public sidewalk. Or Twitter. But I do agree with bcmike. Better to just post 'sorry, wrong image, no new news' and lock it. and what would the point of that be? if he did that, you would all be scrambling, just like you are now looking for any tidbits of info you can conspire. he's damned if he does or doesnt. Oh, pull your your head from the sand. The uproar is caused by people coming here just asking what happened. Which leads to speculation, which leads to people trying to supress the uproar, which leads to stupid arguments over censorship. If the mods want to treat it like a fire, no one should be surprised when all the gawkers show up at the end. Issue a statement, refer people back to it and there is no need for questions. Treat the posters with some level of respect and maturity and you'll be more likely to get the same in return. I've been registered longer than you have here, and I have as much an interest as any in seeing this board stay a relatively open forum for links and speculation as anyone else. The original post here is exactly what keeps me coming back. I only stick my nose in things when it affects my enjoyment of this place. Anyone who's been here for any length of time could have predicted what happened and I have never seen it handled the other way. Not once. If people have nothing better to do than spend all evening deleting posts on damage control, it's their own fault. Last night was clearly a case of reaping what was sown and like I said, completely predictable. What's that old saying about learning from history, again?

Well to throw in my 2 cents, I have to say it seems that it would have been a much better way to handle things, just to say it's a mistake and move on.
Usually being upfront about things will stop a rumour from spreading faster than trying to hush it.
Anyways, this is big news. Someone above was asking if we have any documented stories about different owners' views on the NHL (in Atlanta). If people want to change the subject, I propose digging up some of that research!
Here's to hoping for a very merry Christmas!

Anyone else think Hendrix was a little harsh on Bruinsfan? No need to insult the guy and call out his team. He's a supporter just like the rest of us and got exited about the pre-mature news. IMHO.

I think from what I saw people got a bit too worked up over this (whatever this is ). All of the anger over this has probably added to the rumour mill. I thank Bruinsfan for the support - I think over the last 6 months since I started to see this forum I've actually started hating the Bruins less cuz of Bruinsfan! Anywho, more information on the ownership group in Atlanta would be interesting to me. Anything in the media on their thoughts for or against the Thrasherse would make for some nice holiday reading material.

Better to get above market value for the franchise and move it. Not sure the accuracy of this statement. Belkin in the past attempted to buy the Boston Celtics (twice?) and an expansion NBA team for Charolette. Sounds to me like he's more an NBA guy than an NHL guy. Ofcourse this doesn't mean he couldn't be the only one who wanted an NHL team but implies otherwise.

This is what I get for watching National Lampoons Christmas Vacation last night instead of reading the forum. It sucks to be out of the loop.

I am not sure we should assume it is Atlanta (because of article last night) when Phoenix and the Islanders are still a threat to move. Saying that, it is all positive for Winnipeg. "Coming soon to a MTSC near you"

The Islanders are to the NHL as the Montreal Expos were to baseball for the last decade of their existence. Just basically a glorified AHL team with a steadily dwindling fan base. Given that the NY-NJ area will still have two NHL teams if the Isles left (unlike PHX or ATL), the question is, would anyone actually notice if they left?
I don't think the NHL would have much to lose if they ended up moving...is their "Lighthouse" project still going forward at this point? If not, I doubt their owner has much reason to hang on to them anymore.

Oh come on. How can you place so much in what the return o meter or whatever its called goes to any number. With all due respect to all on these boards including the moderators, NO-ONE has any idea about what is really happening between the NHL and their teams and with TNSE. This is ALL speculation. I have fun speculating on all of this myself.
Sure Bettman has said Winnipeg moving was a mistake he would like to remedy now that we have an ownesrhip group and a great rink and yes there a number of teams in trouble and absolutely TNSE has put a bona fide offer forward for a team and those are all reasons to be optimistic. Is it a 10% chance, a 90% chance, a 96% or 99% chance that we get a team back? Who knows, we are all guessing and hearing rumors from friends that we all have at TNSE or law firms in the city and we all know how close we were (whether it was the stage at MTSC or a certain lawyer in Bettman's office in New York with a check on that fateful day in May) but let's face it, there are confidentiality agreements and that makes all of what is happening now guesswork (perhaps pretty good mosaic guesses but guess work all the same) by ALL of us.
Let's stay positive that we deserve a team and if one comes up we have a great ownership group and facility but let's not put a lot of faith on guesses.
I remain confident that we will get a team. This post was not intended to demean the great work that the mods have done with this site to garner support and provide a great place for a forum for us to all share in the dream but be realistic, they just do not have any inside information.
