This airport is massive. I cannot ever see this Airport needing expansion to suit Winnipeg's needs & having been to many airports; I'd say this one almost replicates & beats out Ottawa's Airport which is fairly new itself. After all the leaks are found, etc...and this thing is done, it's certainly something to be proud of & certainly world class. Because of legal reasons; we were not told when the new date for opening is however; considering it was originally supposed to open next month; you can see just by looking at the pictures, they job is still 1+ year away. ( Could be closer to 2 ) Also; the budget has doubled which isn't a good thing considering it's public money however; it WILL be worth it. The building was actually supposed to be 15ft higher than it is now however; because of buget reasons, there wasn't money yet to build a new control tower. Because the old one will still be in use; they needed to ensure visibility wouldn't be an issue so; they actually had to compact each floor just a few feet to "shink" it down making sure visibility is available from the original control tower. I'm sure over the next few years, a brand new one will be built but, for now this is how it had to go down. Too bad about the lower height. The departure hall is nice, but a little more height would have given it that much more "punch". But you really think this place won't need expansion at some point down the road? There aren't THAT many more gates in the new vs. old airport, and if Winnipeg goes through a growth spurt there could be more passengers. Just look at Edmonton - they handle like what, twice the PAX compared to 15 years ago? If the airport had to be expanded, would it be done in a way similar to WJG's illustration?

From my understanding, this airport was constructed for terminal expansion. Winnipeg's passenger count will grow, like it has been for year now like many other Canadian cities, and will eventually need to be expanded. Centreport Canada could cause this needed expansion to be sooner rather than later. Good to know, nonetheless.

But Centreport is all about shipping freight...what difference will it make when it comes to passenger counts?

But Centreport is all about shipping freight...what difference will it make when it comes to passenger counts? Yes the CORE purpose of Centreport is about freight, but how about the more businesses and head offices setting up shop in Winnipeg because of initiatives like this, the more people will be flying in and out of Winnipeg to do business? It part and parcel of what will be accompanied with growth.

The new Terminal won't open until spring 2011 at the earliest but its comming along nicely. The Control Tower will stay where it is and Im not sure about an expansion if there will be any. If you expand it south youd have to go over where the old terminal is due to the fact youd be in the way of the entrence to the de-cing bays and that can't be blocked. Centreport will mostly be using land west of the airport for their operation.
